How do I fix her dry feet?My parakeets nail fell off and her feet are really dry and flaky? What can I do?
Their probably sick you should take them to the vet immediately. My parakeets nail fell off and her feet are really dry and flaky? What can I do?
I disagree with the ';Expert'; cliffieduckie -
Do Not use over the counter mite %26amp; lice sprays on any bird.
Do leep the cage and perchs and food dishs washed and clean always and change the paper's nighly.
Go online and find the answer to what is wrong and what to do for the bird - http://www.birdchannel.com
and http://www.birdnways.com Search the species first ( do you have a Parakeet or a Budgie )
This is easy to fix. Go to the pet store and get lice and mite spray for birds. Follow the directions on the package, and *POOF!* problem solved.
My avian vet couldn't really tell me what was causing this but assumed it was some type of mite. I have had the same problem with some (not all) of my 30+ parakeets. The mites or fungus seems to attack only some and doesn't seem to be communicable to the others in the same cage; and it doesn't appear to be happening with ANY of my other birds, lovebirds, conures, finches, cockatoos, or any of my Asian birds, plumheads, ringnecks, Derbyans, or Moustache parakeets.
What I use and seems to work wonders is ';Vicks Vapor Rub';. It has camphour oils in it and is known and used by doctors to kill even human toe fungus relatively quick. You can purchase the smallest container at the drug store and use your fingers to sort of massage or rub it into and all over your bird's foot, up as far as the elbow area. You may need to do this every few days for a while to allow it to totally clear up.
I've even used it on one of my English budgies who has an extreme case and even gets the fungus on the underside of his wings and around his beak and eyes. I use a Q-tip to apply the stuff around his eyes and beak area.
I have never had a bird get sick from it, even if a small amount got on their beak or in their mouth. Just use common sense in your application, keep a close eye on the progress and it should work fine for you. If you are a child and do not understand these instructions exactly, have a parent read along with you and help you out.
Vet asap, nails should not be falling off, something is wrong. As far as the dry feet, we have used vitamin E oil on our parrots feet for years when they are dry. You can get it a Rite Aid in about an 8 oz. bottle for around $12.00. That bottle will last years.
